Are you ready to bring your rural expertise to work in a specialist consultancy?

If you understand farms, rural businesses, and the people who run them, R&BS could be the next step in your career.

We are a leading independent financial consultancy with over 250 years of combined banking experience in the rural lending market. We specialise in arranging mortgage solutions for UK farms, estates, and rural businesses. Our independence means we can offer unbiased guidance across the whole market, ensuring clients receive the most suitable financing for their needs.

About the role

We’re expanding our team of rural mortgage consultants and are looking for experienced professionals who want to use their sector knowledge in a flexible and rewarding way.

You’ll build your own client base within a defined regional area, drawing on your local network of farmers, rural business owners and professional contacts within your region. From generating mortgage leads and preparing lending proposals to seeing cases through to completion, you’ll be supported throughout by experienced Directors, and have access to IT, compliance, and marketing specialists within an established business model.

This is a commission-based role designed to work around you. Some consultants work three days per week, others choose to work five – the choice is yours. You will work from home with travel to clients and professionals in your region.

Who we’re looking for

  • Background in the rural sector – banker, agricultural consultant, valuer, or accountant
  • Genuine interest in helping clients navigate their financial options
  • Experience working with professionals and lenders
  • Financially analytical, organised, and comfortable working independently
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • A collaborative approach – you’ll be joining a team of like-minded specialists

R&BS is built around people who know their field. We create an environment where the right people can bring their expertise and do their best work. If that sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you

How to apply

We’re easy to talk to and would be happy to have an initial conversation about how you might fit into our team.

Making the move: Mark Prunty’s perspective

For anyone working as a relationship manager in a bank and wondering whether there’s another way, Mark Prunty has some straightforward advice: if you’re unhappy, do something about it.

“I was always taught that if you’re unhappy with what you’re doing, make a change,” he says. “You can sit there and complain about it, or you can find something different. It’s up to you.”

Mark made that change himself, and he’s candid about what finally tipped the balance. The relationship manager role was, in his words, the hardest job he’s ever done. Not because of the client work, which he loves, but because of everything around it: security documents, facility letters, administration, systems that aren’t fit for purpose, and a bonus structure influenced by factors outside his control. “It was just relentless,” he says. “And when you finish in the evening, you’re never really switching off.”

What he didn’t expect was quite how much lighter life would feel on the other side. The client-facing work – the part he always enjoyed most — is still very much there. But now it’s the whole job, not something squeezed between competing employer demands.

“I’ve got more time to spend with clients, more time for my family, and when I finish for the day, that’s it – I switch off,” he says.

He’s realistic, though. Moving into self-employment takes some financial preparation, and he’s the first to say it suits certain stages of a career better than others. “Having some funds behind you helps in the early months – but once you find your feet, you won’t look back,” he says.

What R&BS means to our Consultants

“Culturally, professionally and personally – it’s a completely different world than working for a bank. I’m my own boss, there are no targets or pressure, just trust in what I do, my expertise and my judgement. I can properly nurture relationships with clients and introducers, which makes a huge difference.”

Laura Harris R&BS

“Managing my own schedule means I can be present for my children, structure my day around school hours and be available to clients beyond the traditional 9–5. It’s been key to making this role both sustainable and enjoyable.”

Laura Harris

“I particularly enjoy dealing with clients and lenders from the very first conversation right through to completion. Seeing it through from start to finish is what makes the role worthwhile.”
